darktable – photography workflow application

February 28th, 2011 No comments

i just stumbled over this nice and free application.

http://darktable.sourceforge.net/about.shtml

a virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers: it manages your digital negatives in a database and lets you view them through a zoomable lighttable. it also enables you to develop raw images and enhance them.

this project tries to fill the gap between the many excellent existing free raw converters and image management tools (such as e.g. ufraw, rawstudio, f-spot, digikam, shotwell). The user interface is built around efficient caching of image metadata and mipmaps, all stored in a database. the main focus is on user interaction, both in terms of a smooth interface design as well as processing speed. high quality output is also one of our goals.

all editing is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. the full image is only converted during export. raw image loading is done using libraw and rawspeed, high-dynamic range, and standard image formats such as jpeg are also supported. the core operates completely on floating point values, so darktable can not only be used for photography but also for scientifically acquired images or output of renderers (high dynamic range).

it is amazingly fast compared to other equivalent (but costly) tools like adobe lightroom, apple aperture or bibble labs.

it also has plugins that enhance the funcionality a lot. in my opinion it’s functionally equal to the highcost payware.

try it out!

PsyncX – An easy to use backup utility

December 30th, 2007 No comments

PsyncX is an easy to use backup/sync utility for Mac OS X.

Saves much time in doing backups as it creates a log for source and destination directories and then only syncs the files that has changed.

Die Raumstation scheint also vorerst gerettet…

be future compatible – reboot your universe now !!

ENGLISH VERSION HERE:

crashed space station crash cancelled: c-base reconstruction project continues !!

spectacular public response: space station’s untimely end prevented for now

In mid-July of this year the non-profit association c-base came close to bankruptcy and faced eviction. The cause was an accumulated rent debt that we couldn’t afford due to chronic financing gaps.

The news about this predicament spread quickly throughout the internet: within a few hours a press release and several donation requests were issued in the blogosphere. National and international communities and culture projects spread the word, even country-wide news channels such as Heise and Spiegel Online provided coverage.

This public response, along with the considerable amounts that arrived on the donation account, led to new hope and motivation among the dismayed c-base crew…

thank you to all activists and donors – your contribution counts!

In the following days and weeks the donation request yielded 12 000 Euros altogether – a good part of which came from private donors, including some large donations. We would like to thank every one of them! Many organisations also supported us through monetary and equipment donations – they deserve our gratitude, too!

There have been many commendable actions in our own ranks as well: the society’s members, who all work voluntarily, showed a remarkable devotion at acquiring donations, managing the space station, and working on projects and events.

Thanks to all the efforts, almost 20 000 of the needed 30 000 Euros was raised in only 6 weeks.

This money was used to reduce our debt with the cooperative which houses the space station, and as a result they have announced the withdrawal of the eviction. It seems that the space station is saved for the time being.

We realize the issue went beyond the cash box.

Of course we want to prevent similar situations in the future. For this reason, the c-base’s board – which has grown by four energetic members as of the general meeting two weeks ago – is not only concerned with the settlement of debts, but also with changes and investments which enhance and stabilise our situation.

To this end, we have consciously decided not to scale down the rented area in order to keep the option of hosting events (with a renewed emphasis on a media-cultural focus). In fact, we are even aiming to develop and enhance the rooms and their infrastructure to provide a reliable and efficient platform for partners and their projects.

Some of the changes and instant measures have already led to a tangible enhancement of the situation; for instance, a newly organised, dependable and courteous bar crew was able to double the revenue from drinks in the past weeks.

Currently, our internal management structure is being reworked, restructured and made more efficient and we are aiming to draw new members by an enhanced access to infrastructure and resources. An improved internal and external communication should further help to support own projects and provide a better accessibility for the public.

be future compatible – reboot your universe now!

So the story continues and it will remain exciting … and you should be a part of it. 😉
With your membership fee you not only support the continuity of a most unusual partof the Berlin sub-culture, you also gain an opportunity for creative exchange and access to trend-setting projects on-board your own space station.

Free your iPod with ROCKBOX

April 12th, 2007 No comments

This is a very nice software written in linux for iPods.

It’s a parallel install. Which means you can use your existing Library and the original iPod software parallel to Rockbox.

It’s themeable and has some nice features that the original iPod software doesn’t have. You can nearly customize everything and even build your own themes. The coolest thing in my opinion is that i’m not restricted to iTunes anymore to sync it. I just have to drop those mp3s in my Music folder on the iPod and i’m done. This i can do on ANY system (Mac, PC, Linux). YES ! so cool !!!

The only thing that lacks compared to the original iPod software is video playback which plays only mpgs very stuttered. But if you need video u can use the default iPod software. Maybe it gets better in some of the next versions. There are daily builds and an active community.

check it out at http://www.rockbox.org/

My iPod now looks like this:

Archibald 2.5

September 28th, 2006 No comments

archibald screenshot

Archibald is a virtual drummer who adds improvisational touches to your drum patterns. As you build your rhythm in the step-sequencer, you assign Archibald a margin of interpretation from 0 to 100%. This margin allows for a more realistic sound, based upon the simple fact that no drummer plays two consecutive eighth notes with exactly the same tone and attack. Archibald may be a “machine,” but his interpretations may surprise you. The sampler engine which accompanies the step-sequencer uses 44.1 kHz resolution and an impressive set of realistic sounds.
The second sequencer, driving the first, allows the user to program sequences based on several bars. From Version 2.1 onward, Archibald may interface with your sequencer via Rewire technology, allowing you to mix the 7 individual outputs from within your favourite sequencing software. You may also export your work as audio, in stereo or multi-channel mode. Or use Archibald to drive any MIDI device.

teleport is a simple utility to let you use one single mouse and keyboard to control several of your Macs. Works on Panther and Tiger.

Simply reach the edge of your screen, and your mouse teleports to your other Mac!

The pasteboard can be synchronized, and you can even drag & drop files between your Macs.
